Why Athleisure Is The Perfect Trend For 2019

With the word athleisure officially added to the dictionary in 2016, it’s safe to say it’s become a real trend of the fashion world- and it is without a doubt a trend that’s here for the long run.

The idea of athleisure is simple: sports + leisure = athleisure. Essentially, athleisure is a glorified lovechild.

With retail fighting to survive in 2015, many were shocked by the 12% rise in athleisure purchases that same year. Inevitably, this market growth has meant that hundreds of brands have jumped on the bandwagon and are now producing their own athleisure collections.

With this, in 2019 there has become a larger variety of styles and prices available than ever before. And now, it’s not just athleisure itself that’s a trend, but there are now particular types, styles and brands of ‘trendy’ athleisure.

In this blog post, we take a look at the growing world that is athleisure, and discuss what the trends will be in 2019.

Leggings…with everything

One of the most popular athleisure pieces since the trend has taken off is leggings (aka the holy grail of active-wear fashion). Women, in particular, can’t seem to get enough of the stretchable skin-tight legwear. Whether you walk into your local primark or stare through the window of Burberry, you’re likely to catch sight of numerous variations of this clothing type.

Patterned, coloured, fluffy (and all of these things combined) you name it, leggings have done it. This athleisure trend has taken off, and consumers can’t get enough of it. With online influencers working in collaboration with popular sport apparel companies such as Gymshark, it’s not surprising that almost every 20-something Instagram addict has followed suit and bought a pair…or five.

However, the influx of leggings in high street stores means that it’s not just “trendy young people” who are opting for this comfortable restriction-free option. Due to their hugely versatile wearability (you really can pair leggings with anything and everything), consumers of all ages are immersing themselves into the athleisure hype without even knowing it.

Socks on show!

Since when did it become cool to have your socks on show? Well, probably since retailers started selling cool socks. With celebrities like Gigi Hadid opting to pair luxury sport socks with their high-fashion outfits, it’s no surprise that Business of Fashion is calling socks ‘fashions new secret weapon’.

Matching tracksuits were once considered cringy, but consider worrying about what jumper you pair with what trousers a thing of the past! Coordinating athleisure is the new in-thing, with fashionistas like Hailey Bieber promoting athleisure with campaigns for top brands like Adidas flooding her insta feed. Top models are showing that matching is cool, and now that this is officially a ‘thing’, consumers can’t get enough of it.

Vintage is ‘in’

With young high-fashion starlets like Kendall Jenner leading the way in terms of athleisure style, it’s no shock that we are seeing a return to its 1970’s roots. Luxury labels who’s branding hasn’t changed much since their birth, such as Gucci, are leading the way with vintage athleisure clothing. This has transpired into more affordable branding, such as reebok, who have re-launched a trainer style based on their original sports shoe design.

In summary, it’s fair to say that athleisure isn’t going anywhere (but up) anytime soon. The wearability of the clothing, along with its practical and comfortable nature means that it is targeting all sorts of consumer types.

As time goes on, we can be sure that athleisure will continue to accommodate the trends being set by big social media influences and celebs. At the moment, that means vintage and co-ords, but really, the sky’s the limit in terms of the future crazes. All we can say for sure is that you should watch this space!

How To Take Care Of My Activewear

Activewear can work wonders in helping to boost your confidence and make sure that you’re always performing at your best. You could even go as far as to say that it looks after you. The least you can do in return is take proper care of it.

Nowadays, we don’t just sport activewear to work out, it’s a staple part of our wardrobe that we wear all day long. So, now more than ever, it’s important to care for our sportswear in the right way- and that’s the same whether you’re a high performing athlete or just love wearing comfy gym clothes! Besides, by continuing to look after your activewear clothing appropriately, you’re extending its lifespan and saving yourself valuable cash.

If you want to take care of your activewear, but don’t know where to start, then look no further! In this blog post, we outline the ways that you can take better care of your active clothing.

Avoid laundry bleaches and fabric softeners

Activewear is known for its bright colours, so you really don’t want to take any action that’s going to drain your fave leggings of their electric blue colour like the treadmill drains you of the will to live…right? In that case, if you’re using bleach and fabric softener to wash your gym wear, you need to stop. Right. Now.

Bleach is a really harsh chemical, and although it’s great for getting some white clothing stain-free, it’s not the right option when it comes to washing activewear. Not only will it take the brightness out of your clothes, but its harshness also means that it can break down the fibres which make up the clothing itself.

Equally, there’s no need to use fabric softener when washing your workout gear. Good quality activewear is soft enough as it is- adding a bit of softener to you washing machine won’t really make much of a difference. In fact, like bleach, fabric softener is also proven to break down the elastic fibres in clothing, meaning that your sports wear could end up losing its stretch and becoming less than ideal in helping you to perform at your best.

Keep it cool

When washing your sportswear, it’s just as important to have your machine on the right setting as it is to control what detergents you’re adding. You should always wash activewear on a cold cycle. This prevents both colour bleeding and reduces the risk of your clothes shrinking into something more suited to a child- cropped tops really aren’t what you’re going for if you’re a self-confessed ‘gym lad’.

Hang Dry

There’s only one kind of spinning your gym wear should experience- and that’s the class you take at your local gym every Wednesday morning. What we mean is you really shouldn’t spin your activewear or put it anywhere near the tumble dryer.

The rigorous process of forcefully extracting water from your washed gym wear can break down the fabric, and also cause it to lose its shape. The good thing about activewear is that, by design, it’s fast drying. So, by ditching the dryer, you aren’t drastically slowing down the drying process.

Hand Wash

The best thing you can possibly do for your activewear is wash it by hand. This may seem like a lot of effort, but trust me, it’s worth it. Besides, think of the money you’ll save! Washing clothes by hand is far more delicate than any cycle on your washing machine, and it does just as good a job. By freshening up your sportswear by hand, you’ll vastly increase its lifespan and maintain its quality for as long as possible.

Our activewear goes through a lot, and if you’re really pushing yourself, it’s likely to get kinda gross, kinda quickly. Activewear is designed with this in mind though, and getting sweaty won’t deteriorate your clothing per se- it’s not washing it afterwards that will.

If you leave your dirty activewear festering in the bottom of your gym bag, you aren’t doing it any favours. Bacteria and sweat on your clothes can in fact cause their deterioration. For this reason, it’s worth washing them as soon as possible, so that the material is always kept as smooth as possible.

These changes are easy to implement into the care routine for your gym clothing, and if anything, they’re easier and less costly than what you’re currently doing. So, what’re you waiting for? Go give your activewear a bit of long awaited TLC!
