Behind 8 Apparel

Take responsibility with 8 Apparel

Too often retailers focus on giving consumers what they want, without taking the welfare of their overseas workers into consideration. As consumers become more aware of the detrimental repercussions of fashion, more are looking for a way to shop ethically.

If you want to shop for athleisure that doesn’t endorse child labour, sweatshops and unfair wages, you can. Read on to find out more about 8 Apparel’s responsible retailing mission.

A change for the better

When was the last time you bought clothing from the UK? Although lots of suppliers are looking for ways to bring their production closer to home, there’s not many out there which operate entirely on British soil.

8 Apparel is a passion project that strives to see retail done right. When you shop with us, you can rest assured that everything–from the materials we use to the seamstresses who manipulate them–are sourced and treated responsibly. Operating in London, Hertfordshire and Norfolk, our clothing doesn’t have to travel far to get to your wardrobe.

Responsible production

The people

From start to finish, our athleisure range is manufactured within Britain according to UK manufacturing and employment laws.

The creative designers to the skilled pattern cutters, you can be sure that your athleisure has been made under safe conditions by people who are paid fairly for their expertise and time.

Creating jobs for quality manufacturers living in the UK and adding to the national economy, 8 Apparel is a brand committed to employee welfare that you can buy into.

The product

Our products are handmade by carefully selected professionals in Britain. From material sourcing to manufacture process, we always aim to make ethically responsible choices.

As the only athleisure brand bringing customers products manufactured entirely in the UK, we are proud of where our clothing comes from and you can be too.

Because our employees are treated fairly and share our vision and passion, the manufacture skills are unrivaled. What’s more, our fabric is premium quality and responsibly sourced. Composed of woven fibres including cotton, polyester, visco, spandex and modal, our athleisure is the most comfortable on the market.

The packaging

Our packaging matches the ethical roots of our athleisure. We’re proud to say that our packaging is 100% plastic-free, providing you with a clothing range that is as ethically responsible as possible.

Instead of plastic wrappers which add to landfill waste and harm the environment for years on end, we use boxes and tissue paper to wrap and pack our products. Not only are these recyclable, they’re also biodegradable!

Eco 8

Athleisure that cares

Consumer awareness is at an all time high. With stories in the press publicising the mark fashion leaves on the world, more people than ever want to know where their purchases come from, who made them and what they’re made of.

In this blog post we explain how we make sure our clothing is as eco-friendly as possible, from its production methods to the materials used to make each garment.

Low carbon footprint

We strive to minimise our effect on the planet wherever possible. From keeping the supply chain within East Anglia to finding ways to taking an environmentally conscious approach to our manufacturing choices, our aim is to keep 8 Apparel’s carbon footprint as small as possible, so we can retail responsibly.

The fashion industry is accountable for 5% of all man-made greenhouse gas emissions. Much of this comes from the way clothing is manufactured and transported around the world.

In an era with a high demand for fashion, choosing to shop with brands that operate exclusively within Britain is a simple yet effective way to do your bit for the environment and shop sustainably.

Plastic-free

Plastic pollution is a shocking threat to the environment and the animals that live in it. It’s estimated that 12 million tonnes of plastic enters the ocean each year.

Plastic is cheap and fast to produce, making it a popular choice for fashion brands’ packaging. However, the damage that this material has on our environment hugely outweighs its assets.

8 Apparel cares about sustainability and is proud to support plastic free packaging for all our products. The boxes we use to ship our products and the tissue paper we use to wrap each item is 100% recyclable and biodegradable.

Responsible sourcing

With the fast fashion trend of the millennial population comes an increased need for clothing materials. As one of the most popular choices among manufactures, cotton is in high demand.

Although cotton is a natural, biodegradable fiber, it requires a large amount of water to grow. On average, it takes 20,000 litres of water to produce a single t-shirt, which drastically reduces water supplies for towns, villages and even entire countries.

Aside from the fact that cotton sourcing is often unsustainable, it’s an overt truth that child labour is rife in cotton harvesting. With consumer awareness better than ever, fashion retailers are being forced to find an alternative.

At 8 Apparel there’s no need for change. From sourcing right through to the production line, we make choices that offer the best option for the environment.

From the responsibly sourced blend of cotton, polyester, spandex, visco, modal and polypropylene that make up our products, to the biodegradable packaging we use to ship them, you can rest assured that 8 Apparel is environmentally conscious.

Inclusive Athleisure

8 Apparel Athleisure

8 Apparel gets it. Clothing that makes you look good leaves you feeling great. Until now, the athleisure market has only targeted the stereotypical gym goer, leaving those who don’t conform to this type wanting quality, comfortable clothing they can feel confident in with little to no options.

That’s where 8 Apparel is different. Our clothing is more than just gymwear. Our athleisure can be worn by a city lawyer or a stay-at-home mum. Whatever your background, 8 Apparel is made for you.

#UBU®

As the passion project of retail veteran Stephen Balmer-Walters, who has over 30 years of experience giving consumers the products they want, 8 Apparel is invested in producing inclusive clothing for every consumer.

8 Apparel operates by the #UBU® ethos, believing that clothing which boasts quality, style and a low carbon footprint is the platform that brings out your true personality and encourages you to be you, whoever that is.

Whatever your size, age, style or demands, 8 Apparel’s athleisure offers inclusive tops, bottoms and outerwear suitable for all.

That’s where we’re different— 8 Apparel is designed for you, whoever “you” is.

We produce timeless, yet modern styles suitable for everything from commuting to work to catching a flight. So, whatever your day has in store, face it with 8 Apparel: the athleisure brand that lets #UBU®.

British-Made Athleisure

Want to make ethically conscious fashion choices which offer premium quality, look and feel?

At 8 Apparel, we get that you want clothing that lets #UBU®, from the way it makes you look to the way it makes you feel.

8 Apparel is the British born project of retail expert Stephen Balmer-Walters. Having worked in fashion since the 1980’s, and in retail for the last 30 years, Stephen knows that consumers want British products made with top-of-the-range materials by skilled craftspeople.

After years of helping other UK brands perfect their products, Stephen saw a gap in the market for unique British-made athleisure that could be worn by anyone, for any occasion. Consequently, 8 Apparel was born.

Exclusive UK production

If you want a home-grown brand which offers quality you can rely on, 8 Apparel athleisure is exclusively British, from design to conception. From initial planning to pattern cutting and printing, every step of the manufacturing process is completed in the UK by skilled professionals.

Because our athleisure range is produced nationally from start to finish, our brand supports the local economy and has a low carbon footprint.

8 Apparel is an athleisure name you can rely on. We’re British through and through, and so is our quality. Our range offers more than just tasteful style that makes you look great. 8 Apparel offers a finesse that comes from premium British quality, ensuring you feel as good as you look.

We only use the best, cutting-edge fabrics available on the market to ensure you feel comfortable in your athleisure, whether you’re tackling the housework head-on or are on the daily commute to the office.

Whatever your reason, if you’re looking for an ethically sustainable British brand that you can wear with confidence, choose 8 Apparel: athleisure that lets #UBU®.
